ISNA Disappointed with U.S. House of Representatives Bill on Hunger

Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives narrowly voted on party lines to take away food from the most vulnerable sisters and brothers in our country. The House version of the Farm Bill, or H.R. 2, cuts the Supplemental Nutrition Program (SNAP) for millions of people, most of whom are women and children, and creates a complex maze of bureaucracy to enforce punitive and unreasonable work requirements. We are further dismayed by this vote because SNAP is one of the most cost-effective anti-poverty programs, and has historically been a bipartisan issue.

In a statement, ISNA President Azhar Azeez said, “No person, regardless of their background, should ever go hungry in the wealthiest nation on earth. Increasing the number of hungry families as a direct result of this legislation is entirely unacceptable.”

We commend Senators Roberts (R-KS) and Stabenow (D-MI) for their bipartisan leadership on the Senate version of the Farm Bill, and we encourage all Senators to vote in support of the Senate Farm Bill S.3042 next week. We implore our elected officials to reject the harmful and cruel provisions included in the House version of the Farm Bill, and any amendments to the Senate version that will result in denying food to any hungry person living in our country.

It is reported on the account of Ibn Abbas that our beloved Prophet Muhammad, may peace and blessings be upon him and his family, said, “He is not a believer whose stomach is filled while the neighbor to his side goes hungry.”

As we mentioned during our #MuslimsAgainstHunger Lobby Day Ramadan Campaign, we remain hopeful that the final Farm Bill legislation will be sensible, bipartisan, and maintain the basic food assistance of SNAP that tens of millions of hungry Americans rely upon every day. We will continue to work with our interfaith partners and apply pressure on dozens of congressional offices in the final days before the Senate vote next week. They need to hear from you as well!
