ISNA proudly announces the Dr. Abdulmunim A. Shakir Scholarship

Twenty scholarships of $1000 each will be awarded September 2010 based on merit and academic achievement for students entering their first year of undergraduate study.

The Deadline for applications is May 1st.

Award recipients will be notified June 29.

ELIGIBILITY:

  • GPA 3.0 or higher
  • Entering Freshman year in college
  • Any major/field of study

Biography of Dr. Abdulmunim Shakir

Dr. Abdulmunim Shakir was born May 19, 1924 in Egypt. He migrated to the U.S. in the nineteen forties to further his education. He earned his Ph.D. in political Science. After finishing his Ph.D he taught in several states before settling down in Michigan where he taught at Wayne County Community College, (WCCC). At WCCC, he taught U.S. History and Political Science for three decades and established the first program ever in Michigan that focused on “Muslim World Studies.” This program introduced many thousands of students to Islam and the Arabic Language. He also served in the United Nations for several years.

Dr. Abdul Munim Shakir dedicated himself to education and educating inner-city youngsters. He was involved in many Muslim projects in the Detroit area and taught at several Islamic Sunday schools. In addition to being involved in education related activities he also held several leadership positions in various Islamic organizations in the US including the Islamic Cultural Institute where he served as President for several terms.

One of the Prophet (SAWS) sayings is “If you do a deed you need to perfect it” which Dr. Shakir held close to his heart. He always strived to be perfect and instill the love of perfection in his students. Dr. Abdulmunim Shakir passed away February 2, 2006. Given his strong belief in the value education, Dr. Shakir arranged for a scholarship fund to be established to support freshmen students in their first year of higher education.
