Source: ISNA

Imam Mohamed Magid, Islamic scholar and vice president of ISNA, presented a special, to the Indianapolis area community on Saturday, July 24, 2010. It was held at ISNA Headquarters in Plainfield, Indiana, and Imam Magid presented a summary of the “Duties of Brotherhood in Islam” as explained by Imam Al-Ghazali.  He reviewed the principles of brotherhood and gave examples and anecdotes from the Prophet.

“We appreciate Imam Magid presenting such an informative and inspirational session.  The anecdotes especially provided greater detail and insight into the topics.  We are left with the motivation and challenge to apply these beautiful principles in our relationships with others,” commented Habibe Ali, ISNA Chief Operations Officer.

The session was first added to the Monday of this year’s ISNA Convention weekend as a special session led by Imam Magid and Suhaib Webb. It was met with such high demand that the room became full to its 200 seat capacity with additional attendees sitting attentively on the floor to listen. As a result, ISNA decided to make the most of Imam Magid’s travels to Indiana by hosting the event again for the people in Indianapolis.

Secretary General Safaa Zarzour stated that, “ISNA aspires to ensure that the many great scholars who come to the convention and visit ISNA will be a benefit to as well as be benefitted by our local community.”

In addition, ISNA hopes to utilize ISNA headquarters more often to host such events in the future for the benefit of the Indianapolis community.

During the session, Imam Magid highlighted such topics as the circles of brotherhood, rights we have on one another, giving and taking advice, backbiting, overlooking others’ deficiencies, jealousy, and true friendship.

“Only Allah is perfect.  We all have deficiencies, so we should try to fix our own instead of dwelling on others’ deficiencies,” reminded Imam Magid. Other lessons included, “Encourage others to do good, and they will try to do more good.”

Imam Mohamed Magid is the current Executive Director of the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) Center in Sterling, Virginia, where he delivers regular Jummah khutbas and teaches classes in many aspects of Islamic studies.  He is the son of a leading Islamic Scholar, who was an Azhar graduate and the Mufti of Sudan, and studied at the hand of his father and other notable scholars, gaining ijaza in several disciplines, including Ghazali's Ihya-Uloom-al-Deen.
