ISNA and JTS Conference Makes the News Support for Interfaith Dialogue Grows
ISNA and JTS Conference Makes the News, Support for Interfaith Dialogue Grows
(Plainfield, IN Oct 29, 2010) "I am proud to be hosting a groundbreaking workshop on Judaism and Islam this week at The Jewish Theological Seminary, in partnership with the Islamic Society of North America and Hartford Seminary, because I believe, as a religious Jew, that there is no more urgent issue for individuals and communities of faith at this moment than to find our way to genuine cooperation, tolerance and mutual respect...The moderates of all faiths have to talk often and well, lest the extremists carry the day. The stakes of not doing so are simply too high to countenance." (Arnold M. Eisen, Huffington Post, Oct 25, 2010)
The two day conference concluded this past Tuesday, with former ISNA President Dr. Ingrid Mattson and ISNASecretary General Safaa Zarzour leading various sessions. Attendees of the conference agreed that ongoing cooperation to develop relationships and specific projects between the two religious congregations was necessary. One potential idea was for JTS lend their skills and assist ISNA to develop Muslim seminaries that train American Imams.
While most of the conference events were restricted to conference registrants, Dr. Mattson moderated a free event that was also open to the public on Monday night.
