ISNA Sponsors Campaign to Stop Hate Speech and Incitement to Violence in the Media

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Source: ISNA

(Plainfield, IN – October 21, 2009) The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) launches this week, along with “The So We Might See” Coalition, a Media Violence Fast campaign to encourage families to take a stand against violent media by making a conscious decision not to watch it. It also calls on media organizations to seek other methods of entertainment and intellectual stimulation.

The campaign focuses on fighting anti-immigrant hate speech. In addition to avoiding gratuitous violence in our entertainment media, we particularly support this year the National Hispanic Media Coalition’s efforts to increase the public’s information about hate speech on national media thus enabling Americans to take a stand against hate speech.

ISNA calls on the members of the Muslim community and the public to sign our petition to the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Commerce to ask them to conduct an inquiry into hate speech so that we can better understand it, and to update a government report that collects statistics and information about the connection between hate speech and hate crimes.

We also encourage the public to learn more about Islamophobia and to ensure there is less hate directed against Muslim immigrants in our country. Please visit ChangeTheStory.net to read more.
