(Plainfield, IN – January 23, 2010) The Islamic Society of North America’s (ISNA) appeal to Muslim Americans to help the victims of the earthquake in Haiti has brought $67,622 as of today. ISNA is distributing collected funds to its partners who have people working on-site in Haiti.
Dr. Ingrid Mattson, ISNA president, thanks those who have generously donated to aid the people of Haiti, and encourages everyone to continue to donate and volunteer to help in this humanitarian disaster.
The Islamic Medical Association of North America (IMANA), one of ISNA’s constituent organizations, already has a team of physicians operating on the ground. It will send another team by this weekend, and is forming more teams to go to Haiti. ISNA is sending $20,000 to IMANA to help meet the immediate need of medical care for the thousands of injured.
Islamic Relief USA aid workers are in Haiti distributing food and water. They are also assessing other projects to help the suffering. ISNA is sending $15,000 to Islamic Relief to help in their efforts on the ground.
Zakat Foundation of America has a team in Haiti distributing food, water and medical supplies. Even before the earthquake, Zakat Foundation had workers in Haiti supplying food to the hungry. ISNA is sending $15,000 to Zakat Foundation to facilitate their work.
Habitat for Humanity, another partner of ISNA in the Haiti relief effort, will play a major role in supplying shelter for the millions of homeless after the earthquake. ISNA is soliciting volunteers to work with Habitat, and will be distributing funds to Habitat as efforts get underway to rebuild people’s homes.
Br. Safaa Zarzour, ISNA Secretary General, noted that 100% of the funds collected by ISNA for relief efforts are disbursed to the needy through its partnering relief agencies.
