ISNA Celebrates Long-Awaited Freedom for People of Libya

(Oct 20, 2011) The people of Libya have flooded their streets today to celebrate the end of a brutal dictatorship in the death of Moammar Gaddafi and some members of his family and cabinet.  The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) joins the people of Libya to rejoice in their new freedom. We pray the death of Gaddafi will now bring an official close to the 42 long years of oppression and brutality he presided over and that the people of Libya will now gain the peace and justice they deserve and have sacrificed so much to attain.

To the people of Libya, your sacrifices were not in vain.  You now have the opportunity to build the just and free society you have been denied by Gaddafi for so long.  It was your blood shed, your lives lost, your children lost, in this painful process of rebirth that has swept across the Arab world this year.  We understand nothing can be done to bring back the thousands of innocent men, women, and children who paid the ultimate price by losing their lives to the brutality of Gaddafi and his failed attempt to hold onto power at any cost.  However, we pray you can find hope today in the knowledge that Libya is now your country and we pray it becomes a home of peace and justice for you forever into the future.

ISNA sends our unconditional support to the millions of people across the world who are not yet free today. We know the brutality of the Gaddafi regime did not allow for the people of Libya to remain peaceful in their struggle for freedom; however, ISNA urges everyone who still lives under oppressive dictatorships to do everything they can to remain peaceful in the struggle against tyranny.  We pray for the least amount of bloodshed possible in their struggle to ensure peace and justice for their families.  The death of Gaddafi should serve as a lesson to all dictators that such injustice will not be tolerated and that the people will continue to stand against dictatorship until they gain what is rightfully theirs, freedom and justice for all.
