Contact Your Local Rep Before Tomorrow's "Peter King Hearings"

COMMUNITY ACTION ALERT

(Plainfield, IN March 9, 2011) Tomorrow morning, Rep. Peter King, the Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, will hold hearings titled "The Extent of Radicalization in the American Muslim Community and that Community's Response."

ISNA and American Muslims, just like all Americans, are concerned with the safety of our nation.  However, we feel strongly that there is a better way to unite and work together to secure our nation.

Take Action Today

First, ISNA asks all Muslim Americans and people of faith to read the full text of ISNA's written testimony in the King Hearings and last Sunday's address on "Our Collective Security" by Mr. Denis McDonough, Deputy National Security Advisor to the President.

Second, we urge you to write Rep. Peter King directly and urge him to amend the scope of his hearings to approach extremism and threats to national security more broadly.  We feel this will be a more effective means to ensure the safety and security of our nation.  A link to his contact page is found here.

Finally, ISNA also urges Muslim Americans and people of faith to contact their local representatives and ask them to stand against the hearings in their current form.

Framing the Message

Below are a list of talking points to aid in your communication with Rep. King and your local representatives.
  • As an American, I am deeply disturbed by any act of violence perpetrated against my country or its people and believe in a safe, secure nation for all.
  • I am deeply disturbed by the scope of Rep. Peter King's hearing, as it outlines threats to national security and acts of extremism through the discriminatory lens of religion and race.
  • These hearings falsely presume that all Muslims are potential terrorists and holds an entire religion accountable for the actions of a few.
  • Instead of engaging Muslim Americans as resources to secure our nation, these hearings isolate them and discriminate against them.  As Denis McDonough, Deputy National Security Advisor to the President, stated in an address last Sunday, this only reinforces the false ideology that Islam and America are incompatible.
  • Muslim Americans contribute regularly to our national community, not only to the safety and security of our nation, but also to the education of its children, the strength of its businesses and economy, and to their communities through service and outreach.  Muslim Americans want nothing more than to continue contributing positively and to do so without fear of undue discrimination and alienation from their government.
  • You may cite specific examples of how Muslim Americans in your local community contribute daily to the betterment of society as doctors, teachers, nonprofit professionals, parents, police officers, elected officials, etc.
  • Remind Rep. King that Muslim Americans have aided in thwarting over 75 percent of all terrorist plots in the U.S. since 9/11 and share with Rep. King the contributions of your own local community to cooperate with law enforcement, locally and nationally.
