ISNA Joins Religious Leaders to Protect Voters in Campaign Finance Laws
ISNA joins more than 200 other faith leaders to sign a letter to Congress voicing immense concern over the Supreme Court’s recent decision to allow corporations to spend unlimited amounts of money on election campaigns. This recent Supreme Court decision overturned previous campaign finance laws that these faith leaders believe more adequately supported the voices of all voters, not just wealthy special interest groups, in the democratic process of America.
The letter was released through Common Cause and Public Campaign this past Wednesday, February 3rd. Common Cause and Public Campaign are both nonpartisan nonprofit organizations dedicated to holding our government accountable and protecting the rights of all voters in the campaign and election process from the wealthy special interest groups influence.
In addition to the letter, ISNA and all other signers urged Congress to pass the Fair Elections Now Act. “We believe Congress must address both the Citizens United decision and the problems of the current campaign finance system by passing the Fair Elections Now Act (S. 752 and H.R. 1826). This measure would empower average people to participate in politics with small donations, and would return the gaze of our elected officials solely to the needs of their districts and the nation as a whole, rather than the interests of those with significant financial resources for campaigns.”
