Thirty Muslim and Christian organizations met in Malaysia's Pahang to discuss the recent attacks against places of worship yesterday (January 17), which marked the first day without a report of vandalism.

Since January 8, 10 churches, a mosque and a Sikh Gurdwara temple had been vandalized by unknown assailants. At least one place of worship has been attacked in different states every day since then.

"We held this meeting as we realized that unity depended on harmonious co-existence of the various races, and that everyone has a role to play in preserving peace and prosperity in this country," Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (Abim) leader Amidi Manan told the Bernama news agency.

Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said it was time to set up an interfaith council: "We need to develop a format whereby representatives of the different religious groups in the country can sit down together to reach a common understanding."
