Say NO to Indefinite Detention!

(Dec 15, 2011) Last week, ISNA and the National Religious Campaign Against Torture asked you to help us protect our Constitution.  We asked you to contact your local representative and urge them to vote against the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which directly violates our Constitution by containing provisions which allow the government to indefinitely detain anyone in America without trial, including U.S. citizens.  We thank all of you who took immediate action last week.

Today, we ask for your help once more, as the bill is likely to pass Congress today and a Presidential veto is now our only option to put an end to this unconstitutional legislation.

Despite significant opposition from groups across the political spectrum and a concerted effort by those of us in the faith community, Senate and House negotiators have drafted a final version of the National Defense Authorization Act that still includes specific authorization for the use of long-term indefinite detention without trial. The same bill also includes provisions that will make it more difficult to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay.

The NDAA is on the verge of passing Congress with these provisions intact today.  The only way to stop these provisions from becoming law is for President Obama to veto the bill.  However, we have recently learned that White House advisers have decided not to recommend that the President veto this bill.  President Obama has previously threatened to veto this bill and it is now time for us to let him know we expect him to uphold his obligations as our President to protect our Constitution.

ISNA joined other community organizations and bar organizations to urgently appeal to President Obama and ask him to immediately veto NDAA; now, we need your help!

Please contact the President today and tell him that you support his vetoing the NDAA.  He must know that Americans do not want this bill.  The fastest way to get the word out is via phone or Twitter.
  • CALL: If you can, please call President Obama at 202-456-1111.  You can say something like: "Hello. I'm _______ from _______.  I am calling to ask President Obama to veto the National Defense Authorization Act.  I don't think that we should pass legislation allowing indefinite detention or making it harder to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay."
  • TWEET: If you use Twitter, please Tweet: @whitehouse No indefinite detention; no Guantanamo: #VetoNDAA http://bit.ly/tvLNUi @NRCATtweets
Thank you for contacting President Obama.  A presidential veto is the last opportunity to stop this dangerous legislation.
