MPAC & ISNA IFTAR
On Monday, September 14th, 2009, ISNA and the Muslim Public
Affairs Council (MPAC) jointly hosted an iftar for government and interfaith
workers. The iftar was attended by approximately 60 individuals from
various levels and departments of the government, including the Departments of
Justice, Homeland Security, Defense, the White House, USAID, and others.
Scout Pack 1576 of the All Dulles Area Muslim Society opened the program with a
flag ceremony and the pledge of allegiance. Imam Mohamed Magid, Vice
President of ISNA, then gave opening remarks to the crowd. Dr. Sayyid
Syeed, National Director of the ISNA Office for Interfaith and Community
Alliances, also gave remarks. The final speaker was Salam Al-Marayati,
Executive Director of MPAC. ISNA and MPAC were happy to host Paul
Monteiro, Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement,
who gave a brief address before the Muslims broke their fast. Congressman
André Carson was also able to attend and give some words to the audience before
magrib prayer. The formal program ended with magrib prayer after which
everyone was invited to take part in a buffet dinner.
This event marks the first time MPAC and ISNA have jointly hosted an Iftar
dinner during Ramadan, and its success is encouraging. We hope to further
good relationships in the realms of Interfaith and Government outreach with
events such as this one in the future.
