ISNA Leadership Attend Treasury Iftar
September 23, 2009
United States Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner hosted an iftar on September 17th for Muslim leaders in America. The intimate gathering included leadership from ISNA, the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC), American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), and the American Task Force on Palestine (ATFP). Regional representatives of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) were also present. The iftar was a great opportunity for discussion on matters relevant to the Muslim American community. Dr. Ingrid Mattson and Imam Mohamed Magid were able to discuss with Mr. Geithner the possibility of having a peace corps for the Muslim community to address issues of poverty in Africa as well as interfaith dialogue and understanding. A focal point for dinner was President Obama's recent Ramadan message, including Islamic charitable giving (sadaqa and zakat). The Secretary accepted an invitation extended by ISNA leadership to visit the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) Center in Virginia.
ISNA applauds the Department of the Treasury's
statement released on the occasion of Ramadan and appreciates the opportunity for real collaboration with the Department for the good of the Muslim community and the American wider public, God willing.
