MYNA UPDATES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

  •  MYNA Calls on all American Muslims, especially American Muslim Youth, to rush and the assist the desperate Haitian Earthquake Victims
  • ISNA Sets Up Haiti Aid Fund

PLAINFIELD, IN (January 17, 2010) -- The Muslim Youth of North America (MYNA) expresses deep sorrow and passes its condolences on to all those directly and indirectly affected by Tuesday’s 7.0-magnitude earthquake.

According to reports, as many as three million people may have been affected by this major quake. Unfortunately, it is projected that hundreds of thousands of people present on the impoverished island-nation of Haiti may have lost their lives, while thousands more lie under the rubble of destroyed buildings awaiting rescue. Thousands of injured victims on the ground await necessary medical attention that they cannot receive at the moment due to the devastating loss of infrastructure as well as lack of qualified medical professionals and equipment. To add fuel to the already burning fire, Haiti has also reportedly felt almost 30 aftershock quakes since Tuesday’s initial and most devastating tremor.

Haiti and its people desperately need monetary and human resources. Action and assistance is needed now and, thus, this call is one of urgency. As millions of Americans, Muslim and non-Muslim, young and old, enjoy the comforts, luxuries, and safeties of our homes and stable lives, there are children pinned under rubble, fathers and mothers whose children are nowhere to be seen or heard. There are rescued, but injured, Haitians who may have a bone that protrudes through their skin, yet nothing can be done for them medically due to a lack of the surgical equipment necessary. The uncovered deceased are now being uncovered in such large numbers, coffins have become a scarcity and, as a result, dead bodies line the sidewalks of Port-au-Prince. This is a reality and we are now morally obligated to use the rizq (provisions) that Allah (SWT) has blessed us with to assist those whom he has struck with an unfortunate calamity. It is a responsibility of American Muslims as global citizens to take immediate and definite action to aid those that have been affected by this catastrophe.

MYNA highly encourages that donations be made to ISNA’s Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund (HERF) to aid the victims of the earthquake.

Donations can be made online.
