ISNA COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR

THE POSITION

ISNA’s Communications Coordinator is responsible for communicating the organization’s mission and activities to its members, the media, elected officials, government agencies, and the general public.  The Coordinator ensures that ISNA’s good image is protected and presented effectively.   

The Communications Coordinator position is full-time at the headquarters in Plainfield, Indiana.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works closely with the Secretary General on all aspects of public relations and communications. This includes the creation and implementation of public relations strategies and the management of all program elements, including media advisories, press releases, online media and other forms of targeted press outreach
  • Monitors all media for references to ISNA, its executives, staff and projects and develops appropriate responses.
  • Drafts external communications related to ISNA news including press releases, presentations and talking points for leadership for various events and press conferences.
  • Responds to inquiries from the general public and industry constituents as appropriate.
  • Raises awareness of ISNA’s strategic partnerships, and cultivates new or strengthens existing relationships with reporters and editors at the regional, national and international levels.
  • Works closely with Secretary General to provide strategic counsel to Department Directors regarding general public relations opportunities and services. This includes but is not limited to developing press outreach, retaining external public relations support, and working with outside vendors to produce, monitor and evaluate coverage.
  • Serves as liaison with publications, multi-media outlets, and production companies.
  • Manages the website content; updates content; creates web-based methods for better communication and marketing.
  • Makes significant contributions to Islamic Horizons, ISNA’s flagship publication.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Minimum three years experience in public relations or communications. 
  • Extensive knowledge of media, and demonstrated expertise in media pitching skills with proven results.
  • English as a primary language; verbal, multi-lingual skills are a plus.
  • Strong writing skills and excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Able to work within budget constraints on multiple projects, and to meet deadlines. 
  • Comfortable interacting with senior executives and board members.
  • Team player with a positive "can do" approach to work.       
  • Proficient in MS Office and Internet/Web Design.
  • BA/BS degree in a related area (Public Relations, Media Management, Journalism, Communications).
