Overview:The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago is the unifying force that brings together a wonderfully diverse American Muslim community in the greater Chicago region, Northern Illinois, and now increasingly, all of Illinois. It s vision is to be the unifying federation of Islamic organizations of Greater Chicago, the leading advocate of Muslim community interests and a catalyst for enriching American Society.
Job Summary:The Executive Director provides direction and leadership toward the achievement of the Council's vision, strategy, and long-range goals and objectives. The ED is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the organization; establishes operating procedures (in compliance with local, state, and federal laws, and policies set by the board); supervises the hiring and evaluation of all staff; and develops and manages the organization's finances. The ED reports to and works in partnership with the board of directors to enable their fulfillment of their governance function. This is full-time exempt position that will work under the supervision of the chairman of the council and shall report to the executive committee. The primary place of business shall be at the Council's office in downtown Chicago
Main Duties and ResponsibilitiesStrategic Planning- Support the Board in the strategic planning process and develop an action plan annually.
- Direct the implementation and evaluation of the adopted programs and plans.
- Management.
- Provide leadership and management to ensure that the Council is successfully pursuing its vision, professionally run, self-sufficient and financially secure.
- Manage human and financial resources.
- Develop written policies and procedures.
- Recruit, lead, supervise and evaluate staff and volunteers
Fundraising and Finance Management- Devise and implement financial development campaigns and cultivate and diversify new sources of revenue.
- Increase donor-base through contributions from individuals, organizations foundations and government agencies.
- Oversee fundraising planning and implementation and the administration of fundraising records and documentation.
- Recommend a yearly budget for Board approval and prudently manage resources according to current laws and regulations.
- Develop and maintain contacts with key funding sources and coordinate fundraising and fund development activity within the public and private funding sectors.
Community Outreach and Partner Relations- Represent and promote a positive image of the Council to member organizations, donors, government agencies and the community.
- Develop plans for community outreach through coalition building.
- Maintain existing relationships and develop new strategic relations.
- Community Organizing and Programming.
- Develop comprehensive knowledge of community organizing models and its techniques; translate these models into the Muslim context by enriching it with Islamic heritage.
- Recruit and train community organizers to promote the Council's work.
- Oversee the design, marketing, promotion, delivery and quality of the organization's core programs.
- Board Relations.
- Ensure that Board meetings are properly organized and run.
- Develop the Council's briefing reports for the monthly Executive Committee, and quarterly House of Representatives' meetings.
- Support operations and administration of the Board of Directors by advising and informing members and interfacing between the Board and staff.
- Prepare agenda for and attend all Board meetings and provide the Board with adequate information to help it reach sound decisions and establish policies, including the financial status of the organization.
- Develop short-range objectives to achieve strategic goals.
- Reports regularly to the Board on progress toward organizational goals and other issues.
- Communication.
- Develop and implement a communications plan utilizing various media venues including print, online, and radio for the purpose of promoting Council programs.
- Develop relationship with people in the media and serve as the secretary of the Media Committee.
Membership Relations- Develop and nurture relationships with member organizations and the Muslim community.
- Grow membership-base to reflect the growth of the local Muslim community.
Regulatory and Grant Compliance- Responsible for all legal and financial compliance to government agencies, and grant fulfillment requirements to funding agencies and foundations.
Desired Qualifications:- Minimum of five years' senior management experience working in a leadership role at nonprofit organizations.
- In-depth knowledge of the nonprofit community and the American Muslim community.
- Well-respected within the Muslim community, preferably with strong local connections with nonprofit community in Chicago, especially mosques and social service organizations.
- Demonstrated leadership and management ability, including a working knowledge of fiscal management, including budgeting.
- Demonstrated expertise in building coalitions and relationships with a diverse set of organizations, Muslims and non-muslims.
- Demonstrated proficiency in managing a diverse set of volunteer supporters.
- A teamwork orientation and strong ability to select, manage, and motivate staff.
- Experience in philanthropy and planned giving.
- A proven track record in securing private and government funding opportunities.
- Hands-on experience in fundraising and business development.
- Successful track record in building ongoing relationships with funders (gov., foundations, and individuals).
- Successful background in working with Board of Directors.
- Ability to frame a clear vision while implementing practical strategic plans.
- Creates a strong voice in addressing social and Muslim-community related issues through nonprofit organizations.
- A strong regard for diversity and cross-cultural differences.
- Demonstrated ability in public speaking, written and oral communications, and interpersonal relations.
- A bachelor's degree is essential and a relevant graduate degree is preferred.
- Proficiency in multiple languages spoken in the Muslim community is preferred but not essential.
Start-up Salary Range$60,000 - $80,000 annually
