What is an Endorsement for a Muslim Chaplain?
An endorsement is the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) affirmating that a person in chaplaincy is performing (or will perform) a valid service that represents the Islamic Faith. An endorsement is based on evidence of faith, education, training and experience in Islamic knowledge. It also signifies that a candidate:
- is a Chaplain/Imam in good standing with ISNA
- has completed appropriate training for the specialized service.
- has appropriate pastoral or imam experience and met educational requirements.
- is placed or is seeking placement in an approved setting.
Why the Need for an Endorsement?
ISNA is committed to placing only qualified persons in fields of chaplaincy. Endorsement is:
- Required by virtually all government agencies that hire chaplains
- Required by many private organizations that employ chaplains.
- Required for membership and certification in virtually all professional associations.
- A demonstration of the chaplain’s commitment to professional competence and accountability to his faith and service.
Who Receives Endorsements?
Endorsements are issued only to individuals who qualify with appropriate credentials and to selected qualified persons who are serving in correctional, educational, healthcare, seminary education leading to ministry, military and other settings. A preliminary endorsement is issued to Chaplain Candidates who meet the requirements of a Student Candidate program.
