Loving God, Loving Neighbor, Living in Harmony
- Description: We are commanded by our faith to love God, and out of a desire to please Him, serve others. Numerous ahadith emphasize the importance of caring for and serving our neighbors. Treating one’s neighbor well, even when he or she exhibits bad behavior, is an obligation. Good relations with one’s neighbor in turn results in a society that is peaceful and harmonious, and free from the many conflicts that plague our world today.

Islam, Pluralism and Social Harmony
- Description: America finds itself at a crossroads with a financial crisis at home and war abroad. At every critical juncture in history, social movements—from civil rights to anti-war—have brought people of all races and creeds together around common values and aspirations. This session will offer reflections on the collective movement that is needed for our times, and the sacred place of love and non-violence in realizing the call for social harmony in a pluralistic society.

Food, Health and Environment: The Responsibility of Muslims- Description: Muslims are one fifth of the world population, the fastest growing faith globally, and, a growing segment of the US population. Muslims are beginning to realize their responsibility for the health of people and environment. Modern food production conventions and environmental impacts of human society affect all life on the planet, and the health of all people regardless of their faith. With an explicit directive in the Holy Quran to be stewards of planet Earth, it is vital that Muslim learn how to serve as activists and leaders for better health of people and planet. As Muslim Americans, we must become more aware and engaged with the issues facing our communities and learn to mobilize around ensuring environmental protection and safer food production systems. This session will explore a range of practical ways that Muslims, and others in the interfaith community, are addressing these issues from a faith-based perspective. The session will address ways in which food systems can be made more healthy and sustainable through organic agriculture, the impacts of environmental degradation, and the ways in which Muslim and other faith groups are offering leadership on issues of healthy food, and environmental health and stewardship. Participants will meet Muslim leaders who can help them start environmental programs at their mosques and connect with other people of faith to become more effective activists on the environmental justice front - for people and planet

Muslim Chaplains & Lay Leadership: The Challenges and Opportunities of Filling the Void of Religious Leadership- Description:
- Part one of this session will explore some of the issues and challenges that confront the Muslim community’s ability to provide competent, professional, religious institutions, in the absence of Chaplains or Imams primarily where Muslims co-exist as leaders to patients, inmates, military personnel, and students.
- In part two of this session, Dr. Muhammad Mansur Ali, a Research Associate at the Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK, will present a power point presentation on a brief historic account of Muslim Chaplaincy in the UK and discuss his research on Muslim Chaplaincy using qualitative methods, i.e. focus groups, and surveys.

- Description: In our work to strengthen our Muslim community and the community at large, we need to effectively empower and engage all of our community members. - Description: ISNA’s success in building interreligious alliances and creating new interreligious initiatives is directly inspired by our shared scriptural commandment to love God and be kind to our neighbors. This session will articulate these concepts through principles from multiple religious traditions.

Empowerment for Muslims: Faith in Public Service
- Description: Our faith drives us to help make our society a better place for all, encourages us to participate and engage in good works, and benefit all those around us. Working for the public good through community service providers, non-profits and governmental agencies provides a vehicle for Muslims to directly work for the public interest and empowers them before Allah (swt) in achieving the goal of helping to improve the human condition. Speakers will discuss the role Muslims play in all areas of public service, and why it is important for the Muslim Community to have a prescence in social empowerment and improvement. Congressmen Andre Carson and Keith Ellison will provide insight from his own life-long commitment to public service, what motivates him, and how his faith empowers him to strive for what's right.

For the Racism, Classism Discussion: Eradicating The ‘Isms’
- Description: We were created in different nations and tribes so that we may know "one" other, not so that we may despise one another. Encounters of racism, sexism, classism and disrespect are always hurtful, but especially when we experience it in our community; when tribalism, cultural traditions and ignorance trump the principles of Islam, we contradict Qur’anic guidelines for respectful interactions with others. This session outlines ways to eradicate discrimination.

Ethics of Disagreement and Co-existence in Islam
- Description: It is said that the Prophet (s) once remarked, “Differences amongst my ummah are a mercy.” Since the passing of our beloved Messenger (s), the community has had to struggle with differences and disunity. This session will offer a prescription on how Muslims can live harmoniously together while respecting diversity and insisting on unity without uniformity. The historic Amman Message will be given special attention during this lecture.

- Description: The highest spiritual state that one can attain to is the station of love for God and that which God loves. Loving God, Loving Neighbor, Living in Harmony: Building Bridges Through Caring
- Description: This session will address the main theme of the Convention. In a rapidly changing world, the need to focus our attention on living in harmony with our neighbors has never been greater. Speakers will discuss interfaith partnerships, service to the community, as well as many other important concepts. Special recognition will be provided to Sheriff Leroy Baca of Los Angeles County for his positive representation of Muslim cooperation with law enforcement during "The Extent of Radicalization in the American Muslim Community and that Community's Response" spearheaded by Rep. Peter King.

- Description: With Islamaphobia at an all time high, and hate rhetoric against Muslims the norm it is incumbent upon American Muslims to rise to the occasion and define themselves rather than having others define them. Join this first ING Speakers Training at an ISNA Convention to learn how to speak about American Muslims and their faith in schools, colleges, and other venues. Attendees will receive training in basic presentations as well as speaker guidelines and answers to frequently asked questions about Islam and Muslims.

- Traditionally, academia has played a key role in the creation , preservation and dissemination of knowledge which has profoundly impacted society and the world. Academic institutions have done a remarkable job in providing strong platforms and sanctuaries for healthy and open discussions of issues facing society. Academia has been viewed with awe and admiration as the embodiment of the freedom of expression. Freedom is a blessing within the framework of sound moral and ethical principles. The session will focus on contemporary challenges of academia in the context of moral and ethical practices.

Elder American Muslims: A Promising Resource and an Emerging Responsibility- Description: Muslim communities are experiencing a new phenomenon. Following a demographic trend in American society, Muslim Americans are also living longer and are more productively beyond retirement. Many of them have skills and capacity that most Islamic centers do not utilize as well as they could. On the other hand, Islamic centers do not always give elderly Muslims the support they need to maintain their quality of lives. This session will address how Islamic Centers should service and benefit from elderly Muslims.

AMSE: Moral and Ethical Dilemmas of Technological Societies
- Description: Scientific invention and technological innovations are contributing to human prosperity showing that life can become better in a technological society. As can be seen through the civilizations progress through the advancement of scientific and technological knowledge. Such progress has made living comfortable, these alleviated the social evils of disease and starvation. But the same progress advancing social conditions has also brought with it other social ills, raising serious moral and ethical questions. This leads to a classic debate about the benefits and curses of technology. Which side will eventually win this debate? Does as technology continue to advance in its upward trajectory? This session will focus on some of these questions and shed light on the future of technology and its implications for technological societies in a world now dominated by the forces of globalization.

Each of us is a Flower: Adoption in the Muslim Community- Description: “Each of us is a Flower”, a children’s song, captures the essence that all children need “the love and protection” of a family. What about all the Muslim orphans around the world? Is feeding and clothing them enough? This presentation will discuss how adoption can help more children experience family life. It will begin with some statistics on the state of Muslim orphans around the world and why their situation begs for deeper involvement on our part. The difference between guardianship “kafala” and adoption as it is practiced in the west will be discussed and how the Muslim community in the west can bridge the gap. We will also discuss what the Quran says about adoption, give examples from the Prophet’s life, the define “orphan” and what our obligations are toward them. The presentation will conclude with how to adopt internationally, connecting with orphanages in Morocco and examples of a time-line that an adoptive family can expect when going through this process

Entrepreneurs are everywhere - in new technology startups, burgeoning social enterprises, established corporations, and even nascent Muslim community organizations. Don't be fooled though. Entrepreneurship is not easy. It requires vision, but also tenacity, decisiveness, and integrity. Join this panel of diverse entrepreneurs for a lively discussion of what it means to be truly entrepreneurial. The goal of this panel is to explore the entrepreneurial mindset and how it can be used to not only build great companies, but also valuable social organizations within and outside the Muslim community.

Kashmir Issue: Post Obama Visit to India- Description: Since the Obama Administration has engendered fresh hopes for the strengthening of world peace and democratic values, we would like to bring during this parallel session renewed attention to the 63-year Kashmir dispute to which India, Pakistan and the people of Kashmir are parties. The Kashmir question is one of the oldest unresolved international problems in the world. The experience of nearly six decades has shown that it will not go away and that an effort is urgently required to resolve it on a durable basis. "Durable' in this context in synonymous with 'equitable'. It is imperative, whatever be the rights and wrongs in the equation that real populations with a pronounced sense of identity, with their suffering and their aspirations rather than just legal title and merit are involved.

Interest in Serving God-Become a Physician- Description: All walks of life can help the community, but becoming a physican enables you to deliver surgical, mental and emotional health care to those in need. Becoming a physician can give you opportunities to travel across the world and care from the simple care issues to surgical care for congenital and adult deformity challenges. As IMANA, we travel to remote parts of the world where healthcare is limited to nonexistent. Countries such as Sudan, Pakistan, Haiti, Indonesia and Gaza have had a presence of IMANA relief members addressing disaster aid issues.

Muslims in Multicultural Societies: The Indian and American Perspective- Description: This session will serve two main purposes- first it will help the audience learn the experiences of American Muslims who are developing their political engagement to strengthen multiculturalism in America. Second, it will showcase IAMC (Indian American Muslim Council) as an organization that will provide a platform for American Muslims to extend their experiences to Indian Muslims and collaborate with Muslim leadership in India to serve the common purpose of empowering Muslims as minorities in America and India.

AMSE Panel: Healthy Living through Leadership and Collaboration- Description: Over the past year, American Muslim parents, organizers and professionals have joined their neighbors in creating innovative and engaging programs to promote the health of their families and address the childhood obesity epidemic. From farmers markets to exercise contests, these efforts have united powerful ideas like physical and mental wellness and sustainable, safe and healthy eating. This timely discussion will focus on introducing an innovative partnership bringing together American Muslim care professionals and organizers and health leaders with government partners to promote the First Lady's Let's Move campaign. Invited panelists will include American health care professionals and organizers involved in health promotion, young leaders in sports and federal officials working closely with faith communities in such efforts. Panelists will share their experiences and best practices and discuss the rationale, strategy and community leadership necessary to successfully implement the initiative. This panel is sponsored by American Muslim Health Professionals, the Council for the Advancement of Muslim Professionals and the Association of Muslim Scientists and Engineers.

Blurring of Reality and Virtual, how to maintain your faith with these changes
- Description: In recent years, American Muslims have become more active on social media networks, such as Facebook, Twitter, etc. They are providing valuable information about Islam to Muslims and non-Muslims across the globe. This panel will discuss how the virtual community is making a difference within the realm of activism, media outreach and pluralism. The internet has opened up a whole new world of opportunities and possibilities – it’s our job to tackle the grey areas and sort out through what is right and what is wrong. Often times we are tempted to do a deed that may not necessarily fall within the scope of our moral values.

Being a Traveler on the Road Less Traveled
- The Prophet (SAW) said: "Blessed are strangers." He was then asked: " Who are the strangers, O Messenger of Allah?' He replied: " They are righteous people among many evil people. Those who disobey them are greater than those who obey them." [ Musnad Ahmad and Ibn al-Mubarak, Kitab al Zuhd]
- We live in a society in which immersion is encouraged and in which we are often confronted with evil. Muslims have always been challenged, but Islam is a guiding star that can help us overcome these challenges as we strive to remain faithful. We must remain confident and unified as we make our short journey through this life. And sometimes, we must be "strangers" Our closing will provide us with tools we can use on this journey and remind us and the benefits of taking the road less traveled.

Winds of Freedom in the Middle East
- Description: The term 'Arab Spring' was coined after the suprising and the dramatic revolutions swept through the Middle East for the past 6 months. The panelist in this session will discuss the political, social, economic, and cultural changes that spring will bring to the area and to the world. The session is a combination of series of parallel sessions that will be focused on the role that the Muslim American community can play in supporting the rebirth of democracy in the Middle East., particularly in countries like Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Syria, Bahrain.
- These parallel sessions have been planned to take place in room 34 from 11:45 AM to 8:30 PM. The schedule is posted outside of room 34.

2. Team Building. What is the significance and role of team building within Islamic organizations? An executive committee or board of trustees may be a group, but not function as a team. In this module, we will explore how to transform a regular group into a synergistic team, and will include a short team-building exercise.
3. Conflict Management. Conflicts permeate Islamic organizations, hampering their work. We will explore how conflict arises, the positive and negative outcomes of conflict and how to manage conflict so as to enhance organizational and interpersonal performance.
4. Strategic Planning. Islamic organizations need to be proactive. To do so, they need a clear vision of where they are going and a mission statement to express what they are about. In this short module, we will discuss how to write effective vision and mission statements.
